Research at the CRL
The CRL has direct access to state-of-the-art, bio-secure and fully accredited
experimental facilities for disease research at the Cefas Weymouth laboratory and carries out
work on a range of diseases endemic to, and exotic to, the European Union including diseases caused
by White Spot Syndrome Virus (WSSV), Taura Syndrome Virus (TSV) and Yellowhead Virus (YHV).
Samples are collected using well defined standard operation procedures from field and laboratory
trials and submitted to the CRL accession database. Samples are allocated a unique identifier and
processed for disease diagnostics using histopathology, parasitology, scanning and transmission
electron microscopy and molecular biology (PCR, QPCR, sequencing) as appropriate. Ultra high-tech
applications such as Laser dissection microscopy (LDM) are also available for use in-house.
